The HFEA's sector report counts 36 licensed treatment clinics in London, the most of any UK region, and 10 in the South East (2024/25). The report does not give a total for England, and we do not estimate one. In 2024, the share of IVF cycles funded by the NHS ranged from 51% in the North East to 20% in the South West and East Midlands.
| Region | Figure | Period |
|---|---|---|

| North East: share of IVF cycles NHS-funded | 51% | 2024 |

| East Midlands: share of IVF cycles NHS-funded | 20% | 2024 |

Across the whole UK, the HFEA licensed 141 clinics in 2024/25: 107 treatment clinics and 34 research or storage-only centres. 71 of the 107 treatment clinics (66%) are private, and most clinics, NHS or private, treat both NHS-funded and self-funded patients.
These are UK figures, not England-only ones. Ask any clinic for its own results for women your age, and check with your ICB and the clinic what is NHS-funded and what you would pay, because rules and prices change.
With 36 treatment clinics in London alone, the book's human criteria help you choose. Map to the Positive contrasts them like this:
| Signs of a good professional | Warning signs |
|---|---|
| Gives you time in the appointment | 10-minute appointments |
| Explains every step | "Don't worry, that's normal" |
| Asks your opinion on decisions | Doesn't answer questions |
| Includes your partner in conversations | Treats you as anxious |
| Is transparent about costs | Pushes tests without explaining |
| Offers therapeutic alternatives | Recommends IVF too early, without a workup |
| Acknowledges the emotional side | No empathy in the face of loss |

Choosing the right doctor is Chapter 31 of Map to the Positive, in Station IV. It adds the technical criteria, the eight questions to ask at a first appointment, and when a second opinion or a change of doctor is the right move. The same station explains the treatment ladder and walks through IVF phase by phase.
