Scotland offers eligible new patients up to three full cycles of NHS IVF under national access criteria, which the Scottish Government describes as the most generous provision in the UK. Same-sex couples are eligible and single women currently are not, but a review announced in August 2026 will report by early summer 2027. In 2024, 54% of IVF cycles in Scotland were NHS-funded.

Announced on 28 August 2026, a review led by the National Fertility Group will consider extending access to single women and to couples who each have children, fertility preservation, donor waiting times and NICE's recommendation of up to three additional cycles. It will report by early summer 2027.
The 52-week standard was met in the quarter ending 30 June 2026, when all patients were screened within 52 weeks. But demand is rising: 1,133 patients were waiting for screening at 30 April 2026, the highest number in the series, although none had waited over 52 weeks.
Scotland's access criteria are under review until 2027. Confirm the current rules with your GP and NHS board before you plan.
Three NHS cycles fit the way Map to the Positive describes good care: a ladder that starts with the least invasive and least expensive option and moves up only as needed. Skipping rungs can be justified with advanced age or a severe diagnosis, but as a general rule:
The book's rung for IVF is 1 to 3 cycles before the strategy is reassessed, which is the conversation to have with your team as you use your funded cycles.
The treatment ladder is Chapter 34 of Map to the Positive, in Station IV. It describes each treatment from ovulation induction to IVF, ICSI, gamete donation and PGT, and when each one is indicated. The same station explains when to see a specialist, how to choose a doctor and IVF step by step.
Take 30 days. If it does not give you more clarity than everything you have read for free so far, ask for a refund and you get every cent back. We cannot promise you a pregnancy. We can promise you will not be guessing.
