IVF clinics and results in Wales
4 licensed clinics, 3 NHS designated centres.

Short answer

The HFEA counted 4 licensed treatment clinics in Wales in 2024/25. Under the CP38 policy in its 2017 version, NHS IVF for Welsh residents was commissioned from the Wales Fertility Institute and from two English centres, in Liverpool and Shropshire. That provider list may be out of date, so confirm where you would be treated with your health board.

Wales had 4 HFEA-licensed treatment clinics in 2024/25 (HFEA, November 2025). Across the UK, 71 of the 107 treatment clinics are private, and most clinics, NHS or private, treat both NHS-funded and self-funded patients.

Results

UK-wide outcomes and NHS funding

  • 35% of IVF cycles in Wales were NHS-funded in 2024, against 28% across the UK.
  • UK birth rate per embryo transferred with the patient's own eggs: 30% in 2024, 38% at ages 18 to 34 and 8% at 43 to 44.
  • 84% of UK transfers were single embryo transfers, and the multiple birth rate was 3.2%.

The HFEA figures used here are UK-wide, not Wales-only. Ask your clinic for its own results for women your age, and check with your health board what is NHS-funded, because rules change.

From the book

Questions for your first appointment

If your care may move between a Welsh hospital and a centre over the border, the book's script for the first appointment is especially useful. Map to the Positive suggests asking:

  • What's your approach to the type of case I'm bringing you?
  • What workup sequence do you suggest, and how long until we have a diagnosis?
  • Which treatments would you consider for this scenario, in order?
  • How do you follow patients in the months between appointments?
  • What's your success rate in cases like mine?
  • If we get to assisted reproduction, do you refer out or perform it?
Where this fits

This is one chapter. The map has 42.

These questions come from Chapter 31 of Map to the Positive, on choosing the right doctor, in Station IV. It also covers the signs of a good professional, the warning signs, and when a second opinion makes sense. The same station explains the treatment ladder and IVF phase by phase.
