CDC's state data brief for 2021 (published December 2023) lists 4 ART clinics in Louisiana and 2,045 ART procedures for Louisiana residents, leading to 660 live-birth deliveries and 698 live-born infants. Babies conceived with ART were 1.2% of Louisiana births, against 2.3% nationally. CDC counts each procedure and birth under the patient's state of residence, wherever she was treated.
| Measure, 2021 | Louisiana | United States |
|---|---|---|
| ART clinics | 4 | 501 performed ART (453 reported to CDC) |
| ART procedures for residents | 2,045 | 246,087 |
| Live-birth deliveries | 660 | 91,906 |
| Live-born infants | 698 | 97,128 |
| Procedures per 1 million women aged 15 to 49 | 1,952 | 3,250 |
| ART infants among all births | 1.2% (712 of 57,437) | 2.3% |

Louisiana residents had 1,952 procedures per 1 million women aged 15 to 49, about 60% of the national 3,250. Note that the two baby counts measure different things: the 698 infants follow the procedures performed in 2021, while the 712 are ART babies among the 57,437 infants born in Louisiana during 2021, which is why the second number can be the larger one.
Louisiana does not require insurers to cover IVF (see the Louisiana coverage page). These CDC totals describe residents as a group; they do not show how any one of the 4 clinics performs.
Map to the Positive explains that in a natural cycle only one egg matures, while IVF aims for several. Phase 1 lasts 8 to 12 days:
Most women describe the injections as less painful than expected; some bloating and pelvic discomfort in the second half is normal, the book says.
Stimulation is Phase 1 of the five phases in Chapter 35 of Map to the Positive, IVF demystified, in Station IV, which ends with the questions to ask your specialist before you start. The same station covers when to see a specialist, choosing a doctor and the treatment ladder.
