According to CDC's 2021 state data brief (published December 2023), 11 clinics in Virginia reported data, and women living in Virginia had 7,252 ART procedures. That is 3,675 per million women aged 15 to 49, above the U.S. rate of 3,250, and 2.5% of babies born to Virginia residents in 2021 were conceived with ART (U.S.: 2.3%).
CDC counts procedures started with the intent to transfer at least one embryo, by the patient's state of residence:
| CDC measure, 2021 | Virginia |
|---|---|
| Clinics in Virginia reporting to CDC | 11 |
| ART procedures for women living in Virginia | 7,252 |
| Procedures per 1 million women aged 15 to 49 (U.S.: 3,250) | 3,675 |
| Embryo-transfer procedures among them | 5,949 |
| Live-birth deliveries from these procedures | 2,699 |
| Live-born infants from these procedures | 2,798 |
| Babies born in 2021 to Virginia residents conceived with ART | 2,383 of 95,825 (2.5%; U.S.: 2.3%) |

Virginia's 5,949 embryo transfers led to 2,699 live-birth deliveries and 2,798 live-born infants. In calendar year 2021, 2,383 of the 95,825 babies born to Virginia residents were conceived with ART.
Virginia women treated in other states are included in these figures, and the 11 clinics are the ones that reported (453 of 501 nationally in 2021). They describe the state, not a single clinic, so ask each clinic for its results for women your age.
On cost, a 2026 Virginia law (HB 328) plans coverage of infertility treatment and up to three lifetime ART cycles through a new benchmark plan from the 2028 plan year at the earliest, after CMS approval. It is not in force yet, so today your plan's own terms decide. Ask your insurer or HR, and confirm, because rules change.
Map to the Positive lists the infrastructure a complete fertility workup needs:
If a practice does not do IVF itself, ask the book's question: "If we get to assisted reproduction, do you refer out or perform it?" And for any IVF clinic, ask its success rate for women your age and with your diagnosis.
The infrastructure checklist is part of Chapter 31 of Map to the Positive, in Station IV, alongside the human criteria and the first-appointment script. Chapter 35 then explains every phase of IVF and the questions to ask before you begin.
