Across the cycle, cervical mucus goes through five types: dry, sticky, creamy, watery and egg white. Dry and sticky are infertile, creamy is low fertility, watery means fertility is climbing fast, and egg white is the peak, in the 2 to 3 days before ovulation.
Cervical mucus is a secretion produced by the glands of the cervix, in amounts and consistencies that vary across the cycle. In fertility it has a double role: it allows or blocks the passage of sperm, and in its fertile state it keeps sperm alive for up to five days.
Its texture follows your hormones. As estrogen rises towards ovulation, the mucus changes type, and each type tells you where you are in the cycle. It is the most reliable, cheapest and most immediate indicator of when you are fertile, and almost no woman is ever taught to watch it.
| Type | Appearance and texture | Fertility |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Dry | Dry sensation at the vulva, nothing visible on toilet paper | Infertile |
| 2. Sticky | White, yellowish, opaque; like dried glue or rubber | Still infertile |
| 3. Creamy | White or cream, more moist; like body lotion | Low, but not zero |
| 4. Watery | Translucent, slippery; like water | Climbing fast |
| 5. Egg white | Clear, glossy, stretches 2 to 4 inches without breaking | Peak |
Dry mucus comes in the first days after your period: the vulva feels dry and there is nothing visible on the toilet paper. It is an acidic barrier that blocks sperm from passing. Sticky mucus follows in the middle days of the follicular phase. It is white, yellowish and opaque, like dried glue or rubber, and still infertile.
White or cream, more moist, with the texture of body lotion. Estrogen is starting to rise. This is a period of low fertility, but not zero.
Translucent and slippery, like water. Estrogen is high and fertility is climbing fast. This is where you should already be having sex.
Clear and glossy, it stretches 2 to 4 inches between your fingers without breaking. This is peak fertile mucus. It shows up in the 2 to 3 days before ovulation, and it is the most reliable sign there is.
You are not looking for one perfect sample. You are watching the sequence: dry, then sticky, creamy, watery and egg white. Comparing each day with the day before is what shows you the fertile window opening.
When the mucus turns watery or egg white, the window is open: start having sex, and keep going until the mucus dries up again.
The five types of mucus open Chapter 15 of Map to the Positive, in Station II (Attunement). The same chapter teaches you to observe mucus step by step, gives you the “drying up” rule that covers the whole fertile window, and explains what to do when fertile mucus doesn't show up. Station II then adds basal body temperature, ovulation tests, tracking apps and secondary signs, and closes by putting it all together into your personal map.
