Newfoundland and Labrador Fertility Services, at Major's Path Clinic in St. John's, offers counselling, fertility investigation, follicular tracking, IUI, therapeutic donor insemination and sperm preservation, but not IVF. As of August 2026, the province says work continues to establish IVF services, with no clinic, location or launch date announced.
The service is at Major's Path Clinic, Suite 103, 35 Major's Path, St. John's, with a team of physicians, nurses and laboratory technologists. CFAS counts one clinic in the province that does not offer IVF (July 2026).
| Date | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|
| March 2025 | Stakeholder consultations begin on a plan for IVF in the province, after a review by Thinkwell Research Inc.; the goal is to eventually end the need to travel for IVF | Provincial news release |
| July 2026 | A full-service clinic described as planned for 2026 | CFAS |
| August 2026 | Work continues to establish IVF services; no clinic, location or launch date given | Provincial news release |
The sources do not agree on timing: CFAS mentions 2026, while the government gives no timeline.
Until IVF opens in the province, it means treatment at a clinic elsewhere in Canada. The provincial Fertility Subsidy Program reimburses up to C$29,000 once (as of August 14, 2026) for IVF and related care at a Canadian clinic of your choice, but you must first be an NLFS patient. Ask NLFS about the current timeline for in-province IVF and confirm what the subsidy covers before you book, because plans and amounts change.
Map to the Positive explains that “fertility specialist” is not a single specialty, and the right one depends on where you are:
| Professional | Best for |
|---|---|
| General gynecologist | Preconception visit and initial workup; a good first point of entry |
| Gynecologist with reproductive medicine training | Complete workup and low- to mid-complexity treatment; the ideal professional for most cases |
| Physician at an assisted reproduction clinic | IVF, ICSI and advanced procedures, when the workup shows the need |
| Urologist (for him) | An abnormal semen analysis or a history suggesting male factor |
From Chapter 29 of Map to the Positive.
The types of specialist are in Chapter 29 of Map to the Positive, When to see a specialist, which opens Station IV with the age cutoffs and red flags. The station continues with choosing a doctor, the treatment ladder from IUI to IVF, and IVF phase by phase.
