Newfoundland and Labrador has no IVF in the province, so its Fertility Subsidy Program reimburses residents who travel to a Canadian clinic for IVF and related treatment. As of August 14, 2026, the one-time maximum is C$29,000, up from C$20,000 set in March 2025. IUI, which NL Health Services offers in the province, is not covered by the subsidy.
| Date | Subsidy | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | C$5,000 per IVF cycle, up to three cycles | 230 people used it, a C$2.1 million investment (as reported in March 2025) |
| March 18, 2025 | One-time funding of up to C$20,000 | Funded through Budget 2025 |
| August 14, 2026 | One-time maximum of up to C$29,000 | Budget 2026: C$1.8 million for the increase; program total C$5.8 million |

Some documents dated before the August 2026 increase, such as the CFAS mapping of July 2026, still show C$20,000. The current figure on the provincial release and the NL Fertility Services page is C$29,000.
The path runs through NLFS: get a referral, become a patient there, then choose the clinic elsewhere in Canada where you will do IVF. You pay first and are reimbursed after applying. Travel counts only if your treatment costs leave room under the limit, so keep treatment and travel receipts separate.
Amounts the province reimburses cannot also be claimed under the federal Medical Expense Tax Credit, which excludes reimbursed expenses (Government of Canada, September 2024).
The amount changed in March 2025 and again in August 2026. Confirm the maximum and the eligible items with NLFS, and ask your insurer what it covers, before you book treatment.
When the clinic is your choice, the book's technical criteria help you compare. Map to the Positive suggests looking at:
The human criteria matter just as much: time in the appointment, clear explanations and transparency about costs.
How to choose the right doctor is Chapter 31 of Map to the Positive, in Station IV. It adds the questions to ask at the first appointment and when to get a second opinion. The station also explains when to see a specialist, the treatment ladder and IVF step by step.
Take 30 days. If it does not give you more clarity than everything you have read for free so far, ask for a refund and you get every cent back. We cannot promise you a pregnancy. We can promise you will not be guessing.
