Source: Assisted reproductive technology in Australia and New Zealand 2024, ANZARD annual report, NPESU UNSW (August 2026). The report gives no public vs private split.

In 2022, New Zealand recorded 8,652 ART treatment cycles and 2,048 live births, 23.7% of cycles (NPESU report commissioned by ACART, June 2025). The seven clinics reporting that year were Fertility Associates in Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton and Wellington, Fertility Plus (Auckland) and Repromed Auckland.

Public treatment

Where funded cycles happen

  • Fertility PLUS, at Greenlane Clinical Centre in Auckland, is a public service of Health NZ (Te Toka Tumai Auckland) providing both funded and private treatment (Healthpoint, May 2026).
  • In the Northern region, funded treatment is delivered by three providers: Fertility Plus, Repromed and Fertility Associates (Healthpoint, May 2026).
  • Fertility Plus initiated 1,491 ART cycles in 2020; 90% of Pacific and 71% of European IVF cycles there were publicly funded (Auckland DHB, August 2021).
  • Canterbury DHB estimated in 2019 that 51% of New Zealand IVF cycles over the previous 10 years were publicly funded, about 1,550 a year, citing Fertility Associates' data.

National figures do not tell you how one clinic performs for women your age. Ask your clinic for its own results, and confirm with your regional fertility service which provider will deliver your funded cycle, because rules change.

From the book

Fresh or frozen: how an IVF cycle works

In 2024, New Zealand clinics ran more thaw cycles than fresh ones. Map to the Positive explains how an IVF cycle produces embryos that can be used later:

  1. Ovarian stimulation, 8 to 12 days of daily injections with ultrasound monitoring every 2 to 3 days.
  2. Egg retrieval, an outpatient procedure under light sedation lasting 20 to 30 minutes.
  3. Fertilisation and culture, 3 to 6 days in the lab, by conventional IVF or ICSI; embryos can be transferred fresh or frozen for future use.
  4. Embryo transfer, in the same cycle (fresh) or a later one (frozen).
  5. The two-week wait, ending with a blood beta-hCG test on day 12 to 14.

The book notes that many centres now prioritise frozen embryo transfer for slightly better rates.

Assisted reproduction demystified is Chapter 35 of Map to the Positive, in Station IV. It details each of the five phases, the side effects, common myths and the questions to ask before you start IVF. The same station covers when to see a specialist, how to choose a doctor and the full treatment ladder.
