CDC's state data brief for 2021 (published December 2023) lists 2 ART clinics in the District of Columbia and 1,668 ART procedures for DC residents, leading to 586 live-born infants. Babies conceived with ART were 5.8% of DC births, against 2.3% nationally. CDC counts by the patient's place of residence, so DC residents treated in clinics outside the District are still counted as DC.

DC's rate of 8,515 procedures per 1 million women aged 15 to 49 was more than two and a half times the national 3,250, and ART babies made up 5.8% of births, more than twice the national 2.3%. The 586 infants follow the 2021 procedures; the 504 are ART babies among all infants born in DC during 2021.
These figures predate DC's large-group IVF coverage, which began on January 1, 2025 (see the DC coverage page). They describe how DC residents used IVF, not how any clinic performs.
Map to the Positive sets out three technical criteria for choosing a professional:
The book is just as firm on the human criteria: time in the appointment, clear explanations and transparency about costs.
These criteria come from Chapter 31 of Map to the Positive, on choosing the right doctor, in Station IV, with a script of questions for the first appointment. The station also covers when to see a specialist, the treatment ladder and IVF step by step.
