WA coverage

Does insurance cover IVF in Western Australia?
No state rebate; a limited public clinic.

Short answer

Western Australia has no state IVF rebate. The public Reproductive Medicine Service at King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH) offers a limited infertility service with strict entry criteria, and in 2024-25 its Fertility Clinic referred 60 patients to 5 fertility clinics for 81 treatment cycles. Beyond that, Medicare benefits for ART apply as in the rest of Australia.

Referrals for treatment, 2024-25

In 2024-25 the KEMH Fertility Clinic referred 60 patients to 5 fertility clinics, which led to 81 treatment cycles, including 19 IVF cycles with a fresh embryo transfer and 21 with a thawed embryo transfer (Reproductive Technology Council, September 2025).

The law

ART providers in WA must be licensed. The Human Reproductive Technology Act 1991 and the Surrogacy Act 2008 apply until the Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy Act 2025 (Royal Assent 18 December 2025) commences, which is expected in mid-2027 (WA Department of Health, January 2026).

What this means for you

Most IVF in WA is private, with Medicare

If you fall outside the KEMH criteria, your support is Medicare, which pays benefits for clinically relevant ART services such as IVF, ICSI and IUI; Services Australia's billing guidance sets no cycle limit (April 2025).

  • If you are 38 or under, ask your GP early whether a referral to KEMH fits your situation.
  • Ask KEMH what you would pay if you are referred on to a fertility clinic.
  • Facing cancer treatment? Ask about an urgent fertility appointment before it starts.
  • Ask your specialist which Medicare items apply to your cycle.
Rules change

WA's ART law is changing, with the new Act expected in mid-2027. Confirm the current criteria with KEMH and the WA Department of Health, and your costs with Medicare and your clinic.

From the book

The first rung: treatment before IVF

Much of what KEMH offers, from ovulation induction to surgery, sits on what Map to the Positive calls Level 1: clinical and medication optimisation, which takes 3 to 6 months to evaluate. The book describes three groups of options:

  • Ovulation induction for ovulatory dysfunction: letrozole (now the first choice for PCOS under the main guidelines), clomiphene citrate, or injectable gonadotropins in selected cases with monitoring.
  • Treating associated conditions: correcting hypothyroidism, treating high prolactin, metformin for insulin resistance, and targeted supplementation based on deficiencies.
  • Minimally invasive surgery: hysteroscopy for polyps and submucosal fibroids, laparoscopy for endometriosis, cysts and adhesions, and correction of a septate uterus.
Where this fits

This is one chapter. The map has 42.

These options open the treatment ladder in Chapter 34 of Map to the Positive, in Station IV. The chapter then climbs through timed intercourse, IUI, IVF, ICSI, egg or sperm donation and genetic testing of embryos, and explains why responsible medicine starts at the lowest rung that fits. The same station covers when to see a specialist and IVF step by step.
