Manitoba does not fund fertility treatment directly. Its refundable Fertility Treatment Tax Credit returns 40% of eligible costs, and from the 2024 tax year it applies to up to C$40,000 of expenses a year, for a credit of up to C$16,000. Treatment must be provided in Manitoba, as set out by the Manitoba Tax Assistance Office (page accessed October 2026).
| Before 2024 | From the 2024 tax year | |
|---|---|---|
| Credit rate | 40% | 40% |
| Maximum eligible expenses per year | C$20,000 | C$40,000 |
| Maximum credit per year | C$8,000 | C$16,000 |

The credit is refundable and is claimed on your income tax return, with no separate application. It applies to treatments or medications on or after October 1, 2010.
Because it is a tax credit, you pay the clinic and the pharmacy first and get 40% back when you file. Plan the cash flow: the refund arrives after the tax year, not during treatment.
Limits doubled in 2024 and could change again. Confirm the current rules with the Manitoba Tax Assistance Office and your insurer before you plan treatment.
When you are paying and claiming later, cost transparency matters. Map to the Positive lists the signs of a good professional and the warning signs:
| Signs of a good professional | Warning signs |
|---|---|
| Gives you time in the appointment | 10-minute appointments |
| Explains every step | Doesn't answer questions |
| Is transparent about costs | Pushes tests without explaining |
| Offers therapeutic alternatives | Recommends IVF too early, without a workup |
| Includes your partner in conversations | Treats you as anxious |
From Chapter 31 of Map to the Positive.
How to choose the right doctor is Chapter 31 of Map to the Positive, in Station IV. It gives the technical and human criteria, the questions to ask at the first appointment and when a second opinion makes sense. The same station covers when to see a specialist, the treatment ladder and IVF step by step.
Take 30 days. If it does not give you more clarity than everything you have read for free so far, ask for a refund and you get every cent back. We cannot promise you a pregnancy. We can promise you will not be guessing.
