There is no proven safe level of alcohol for pregnancy, so the international recommendation is zero alcohol from the moment you are actively trying. Fertilization and implantation happen before a test can turn positive, and alcohol consumed in that window can affect early embryonic development.
The logic is about timing. By the time a pregnancy test turns positive, fertilization and implantation have already happened. If you wait for the positive to stop drinking, the first days of embryonic development have already been exposed.
Alcohol also matters before conception. Consistent studies show reduced fertility with regular consumption above 5 drinks a week. And for men, excess alcohol reduces sperm quantity and quality.
The book holds this line in other chapters too. In Station III, the Mediterranean eating pattern it recommends includes wine in moderation in the studies, with an explicit exception: not for TTC women. Alcoholic drinks sit on its list of things to cut back or cut out.
The chapter's summary sets a clear floor: alcohol ideally zero, or at the very least from ovulation to the end of the cycle. That is the stretch of the cycle when an embryo may already be developing without you knowing.
And when the positive comes, the book's checklist for the first 24 hours repeats it: cut out alcohol immediately, if you haven't already.
Sperm is produced continuously in cycles of roughly 72 to 90 days, so the quality of today's sperm reflects his habits over the last three months. Above 5 drinks a week, the book describes a measurable effect on testosterone and sperm quality.
That is why the first month of the book's 90-day plan says it in five words: cut out alcohol (you), cut back (him).
Neither of these is the main reason to stop. But they show how one glass in the evening reaches well beyond the evening.
Alcohol is the first of four substances in Chapter 10 of Map to the Positive, “The real detox”, in Station I (Foundation). The same chapter covers caffeine, tobacco, recreational drugs and the medications to review with your doctor. Station I as a whole gives you the self-assessment, the 11 preconception tests, smart supplementation and the preconception visit, so your habits and your tests point in the same direction before you start trying.
Take 30 days. If it does not give you more clarity than everything you have read for free so far, ask for a refund and you get every cent back. We cannot promise you a pregnancy. We can promise you will not be guessing.
